I have so been hooked by The Great British Sewing Bee inspired sewing bug. So, selfishly, I have created this list as I have become more than a little obsessed with getting my sewing machine and scissors out.
I am guessing I am not the only one who has been reminded of the wonderful creativity that is sewing. Such a brilliant skill to have under your belt or to learn. I had forgotten.
When I was little (I am the youngest of 4 girls), my wonderfully skilled mum made pretty much all our clothes. Beautiful dresses, amazing little jackets and the oh so practical towelling poncho’s for our annual seaside holiday. She even made my silk wedding dress with hundreds of pearl buttons and loops, beautiful embroidery on the front and the most amazing sleeves.
Lucky for me she passed on lots of her knowledge, so I am itching to get making. But first shopping!!! I have found some wonderful sewing shops online to help me (and you) get sewing.
All are independent online shops, and all being run right here in the UK. When you shop with them you know they are passionate about sewing and love what they do.
Sewisfaction
Sheona began Sewisfaction when she realised the happiness a handmade wardrobe can bring. Based in Wokingham, this is a great shop for fabrics, patterns and haberdashery. A brilliant and wide range.
Minerva Crafts
This shop was created over 20 years ago and developed from a love of sewing and knitting. So many brilliant products, you will find all that you need for sewing (and other crafts). Lots of inspiration on their blog too, where their blogger network show their creations.
Stitchy Bee
Some gorgeous fabrics here. Cheryl began Stitchy Bee as a sewing blog and has now developed it into a lovely shop selling beautiful fabric at a reasonable price. A really great collection and Cheryl has some helpful Youtube tutorials too.
Sew Essential
Back in 2004 this shop was created by an award winning seamstress who was struggling to find what she needed for her sewing. Now Sew Essential has become an online sewing superstore, selling over 20,000 products. Everything you need for sewing is here, plus a really helpful blog and Youtube channel.
I have previously shared some sewing shops in my blog post Favourite Finds: Sewing, Knitting & Crochet Supplies. I shared Textile Express, Beyond Measure, and Cotton Patch.
Textile Express a brilliant shop for fabric, patterns and haberdashery.
Beyond Measure, a sewers heaven and includes so many special and unique sewing related things, you really must take a look. A real treasure of a shop.
Cotton Patch, the one stop shop for patchwork and quilting.
The lovely Poppy Treffry have some great products too, all handmade and designed in Cornwall. Unique gifts, home decor and accessories.
I have really enjoyed pulling this collection of great shops together. I hope you find them useful. I would love to hear if I inspired you to shop with them and what you have made.
Happy browsing, shopping and sewing 🙂
If you want to keep up to date with all the lovely shops I find, products I share and offers available, sign up for my emails. I send them out regularly but not too often! You can sign up top right or bottom right.
Sewing supplies from independent shops UK. Sharing independent shops at Love Our Shops UK a shopping directory.
Please be aware. All opinions in this blog post are mine. At the time of writing Poppy Treffry, and Twinkle & Me are members of my shopping directory. None of these shops have paid me to be in this blog post. Though I mention lots of shops here, you must form your own opinion as to whether the shop and their products are for you.
I aim to include only independently owned shops. Sometimes it is tricky to work out if they are. So, as far as I can tell, they are independently owned, but apologies if the odd one that is not slips into my blog post….they hide it well!
