Have you tried ribbon embroidery? Simply Ribbons have an extensive range of ribbons, lots of which are suitable for ribbon embroidery.
Lots of different widths, materials and colours. A really good size is 3mm to 5mm but bigger will work too.
Here I have a couple of options for embroidery ribbon: Sheer heart ribbon, Satin Ribbon and Silver Edged Ribbon.
