All opinions in this blog post are mine. At the time of writing all shops mentioned are members of my shopping directory.
Though I mention lots of shops here, you must form your own opinion as to whether the shop and their products are for you.

I love shopping at independent shops, whether that is online, on the high street or at a stall at a market or an event.
Shopping independent is often seen as a “good deed” – something we should do. But that isn’t how I see it. For me the benefits are all about me! This means I get to do something that I love doing whilst also knowing I support the UK economy and all the other benefits that we all gain from.
To get to the bottom of what’s in it for me, I mulled over what if the only place to shop was with the big market places or one of the huge retailers the thought scared me by the way). What would I, as an avid user of small businesses, lose out on and miss most?
Here are 10 selfish reasons to shop independent shops around your wallet, your joy, your choice and your life.
Independent shops don’t have a cookie-cutter selection. They handpick their collections using their expert knowledge, a personal understanding of their customer and using their well researched suppliers. Some create their own unique products too. All offer something special. You get to be the one with the “Where did you find that?!” moment.
✨ Be the friend with the best taste.
Independent shops are full of personality, passion, and stories. It’s the opposite of mindless scrolling or soulless supermarkets. Real humans, curated collections, joyful experiences. Shopping with people who have a real passion for what they do, get to know their customers, go that extra mile and do everything with personality, is a joyful way to shop.
🙌Retail therapy that actually feels good – shop independent.
Love the planet? Hate fast fashion? Want better quality? Buy British? Keep your money in the UK? Whatever matters to you – there’s an independent shop that’s already aligned. Shopping indie is values-based shopping made easy.
✨Your values. Your money. Your choice. Shop independent.
Indie shops are picky. They care. They source products that last and matter – not ones built for a landfill. And no inflated prices for logos or celebrity ads. With indies you tend to buy less and choose well. In the long run that is better value. As the saying goes “buy cheap, buy twice”.
✨Buy less, choose well. Independents make it easy.
Indie shopkeepers care if you’re happy. They wrap your parcel with love, answer your questions with care, and often remember you next time. It’s personal.
🙌Want customer service that actually feels human? Shop with small businesses.
Big retail shows you what they want you to buy. Indies show you what they love – and what you might love too. It’s discovery, not just delivery. Obviously small businesses want to make a profit from what they do, but for them, unlike the big players in the retail sector, they aren’t driven solely by profit.
✨Break up with boring shopping. Find joy in your shopping experience.
Indie shops are a treasure trove of thoughtful, meaningful, and downright genius gift ideas. You’ll be known as the best gift-giver.
✨Warning: shopping indie may result in legendary gift-giving status.
Independent shops shape your high street, your community, your online world. The ones you shop with are the ones that stick around.
✨Where you shop shapes the world you live in. Choose wisely.
That candle from a maker in Yorkshire. That handmade dog bowl from Wales. That zero-waste beauty brand. The sewing shop with quality tools. The clothes boutique with in house designed ranges. The ethical fashion range at the small online store. I could definitely go on. These are products and shops worth sharing.
✨“I found it in a tiny indie shop.”
🙌Because you’re not just shopping – you’re making a difference to someone’s day, someone’s dream, and your own life too. Instant good vibes.
I get to choose where I shop and what I buy. I want these independent shops in my life. I want to experience the joy I feel when I shop with them (or even browse them or view their personality rich social media). Imagine a UK without them. Actually don’t, it is a sad thought.
✨I want choice, I want to choose.
💬Yes, shopping independent supports real people and helps the economy. But let’s not forget – it also makes shoppers happier, more stylish, more thoughtful, and more connected. So go on… be a little selfish. Choose independent.

I hope you are finding this list of UK online shops useful. There are lots of independent shops on this list and I will be adding to it all the time. Keep checking back for more help with finding independent shops.
Independent shops are the best shops to shop with for so many reasons. They should be our automatic first choice. You can find out more about my #ipledgeindie shop independent movement here.
Happy browsing and shopping 😊 #ipledgeindie
Barbara
PS Why not join in with my #ipledgeindie campaign – shop independent, share independent shops on social media and tell everyone you #ipledgeindie. Find out more here.
There are lots of brilliant shops on my shopping directory all independent and amazing! All shops on my directory must comply with certain trustworthy attributes. These are applied to all those on this Finding UK Shops Online list too. The criteria can be found on here.
Want to be inspired by what independent shops offer and what I am up to? Sign up for my emails
I get lots of compliments on my emails. “They are inspiring, informative and really lovely to receive. It is like getting an email from a friend who is telling me about all the lovely shops, products and offers that are around at the moment.”

I pledge indie #ipledgeindie. Independent shops are amazing. UK Online Shop. Sharing independent shops online at Love Our Shops UK shopping directory.
All opinions in this blog post are mine. At the time of writing some shops mentioned are members of my shopping directory. None of the shops have paid me to be on this list. Though I mention lots of shops here, you must form your own opinion as to whether the shop and their products are for you. Clicking on a shop link will send you to their website, from there you are covered by their terms and conditions.

Gail Bryden is the aromatherapist founder of JustBe Botanicals. She hand blends all her products in Scotland, using purely natural ingredients designed to balance the emotions and enhance a sense of wellbeing.
Gail lives in Edinburgh and has the perfect address for an aromatherapist; Rosebank Cottages, Gardner’s Crescent. She is one busy lady and has developed so many lovely products in her many years of running JustBe Botanicals. I am intrigued how she has got to where she is today. Plus, how she manages to get her picture taken with so many famous people!
Thank you. I started with a range of 4 aromatherapy massage oils that I used in treatments.
Through working with a luxury spa, I was asked for an anti-ageing facial followed by a teenage facial. The range developed over the years and there’s now 6 sensory spa treatments and something for each of the 5 senses, including a range of music called JustBe In Tune and aromatherapy chocolates.
JustBe’s an all natural range that matches botanical’s and a blend of aromatherapy oils with your mood. There are 6 signature blends: Happy, Active, Energised, Tranquil, Detox & Pure.
With award winning skincare, soy candles, herbal teas and chocolates to choose from, there’s an opportunity to practice mindfulness, whether out and about or at home.
The products are 100% natural (free from any nasties), ethically made (cruelty free) and nut free.
I love them all. If I had to choose one, it would be the Hydrating Serum & Treatment Oil, from the facial range, due to how many people compliment me on my skin! The duo of 10ml x 2 (£25) come with a money back radiance guarantee and have been described as “pretend sleep and clean living in a bottle.”
I work from home. I recently moved from making most of my products on my kitchen table to my loft space. It’s a real cottage industry.
Working from home, loving what you do and living in central Edinburgh all help. There’s always something going on in Edinburgh and as I work for myself I can be flexible.
There are 6 spa treatments: 2 facial, 4 body.
The JustBe Wellness Journey starts with the simple question how would you like to feel?
Following the consultation, a scent test will let you know which aromatherapy blend your mind and body needs. Before your treatment you’ll have the opportunity to select 3 JustBe Inspiration Cards, and you’ll be offered some JustBe Chocolate at the end of your treatment. A very special experience.
The Gin Spa opened in Glasgow in December last year – a spa using botanically based products found in gin. They selected JustBe Botanicals range for their treatments and the feedback has been incredible. I currently offer the therapist training.
There have been so many surprising moments from receiving 21 awards, being asked to display within 10 Downing Street as part of Small Business 100, collaborating with the Edinburgh Fringe Festival on chocolate and meeting / having selfies with so many well known faces.
The proudest moment was perhaps being asked to supply product for Michelle Obama’s changing room when she visited Edinburgh earlier this year.
The big plan is to create JustBe at Home Gatherings. They will give people the opportunity to experience wellbeing and mindfulness at home. This will hopefully be launched in conjunction with a charitable range to support Mental Health. This will be such a wonderful product to launch.
Two new eye products are in development, they will be launched early next year. I am very excited about these!!
Be yourself, keep it real and enjoy the journey.
Liberating and rewarding.
Thank you so much Gail. Your passion for your wonderful products really shines through. I love how your business has grown and developed over the years. Such an inspiration.
If you would to see more of what Gail is up to and her gorgeous products, head over to Instagram @justbebotanicals or on Facebook @justbebotanicals. You can see all her fab selfies with celebs over there too.
I am looking forward to continuing to follow the JustBe Botanicals story.
I first featured JustBe Botanicals on my blog post sharing lots of Beauty Products.
I hope you have enjoyed reading about Gail’s Our Shops story. JustBe Botanicals is a member of Love Our Shops UK shopping directory.
Until next time, happy browsing and inspired shopping.

That is what it means to me.
There are lots of sayings around using a small business. “Supporting a small business is making someone’s dream come true” and “when you support a small business an actual person does a happy dance.” Both of these are so true.
Small Business Saturday UK is a way of supporting and shopping with independent shops, either online or on the high street. There are so many reasons why this is so important.
So, in honour of the wonderful day, Small Business Saturday UK, I am sharing with you 9 fabulous independent shops. All based right here in the UK. All of which, absolutely definitely, do a happy dance when a lovely customer shops with them. I really must make a video of that one day!!
Nestling in the foothills of the North Cotswolds, this gorgeous shop, has one aim in life. “Our aim is quite simply to make pure, natural soap accessible to everyone” says founder Emma. Their range is gorgeous. Starting in 2008 in her kitchen, Emma wanted to make the purest organic soap possible. She has achieved this and a lot more.
The Little Soap Company range includes handcrafted artisan soaps, traditional everyday soap range, liquid bath and body products, Little Beast pet range, Eco-soy Candles and lovely organic lip balm kits. All can be bought individually or as lovely gift sets.
The sole aim of Hoobynoo is to live a colourful life. Starting life in 2012 as a children’s jewellery range, this shop has now added lots more to it’s highly colourful and creative store. Everything is designed by founder Chiara, and lots can be personalised.
From their lovely new studio in Kent they create pet tags, mugs, jewellery, cushions, decorations, bags, pin badges, nail transfers and so much more. In fact, they are creating new products all the time, so already this list is probably out of date!
This shop is all about capturing cherished moments and enriching lives. Through all the lovely journals and books they create. Thoughtfully designed journals, which are designed to capture every stage of life and create precious ways to hold on to memories.
From their Head Office in Bradford-on-Avon, they are always busy creating new products. They really are special and such a thoughtful gift. Their first products were family memory journals – Journals of a Lifetime. Now they have a wide range of journals, books and stationery. All designed to cover every stage of life from birth to all ages. I love them.
This gorgeous shop, design and create all their wonderfully unique textile accessories in beautiful Cornwall. Using creative machine embroidery technigues and gorgeous fabrics, they make a wide range of accessories for you and your home. With designs to suit many different tastes. Coffee lovers, dog lovers, cat lovers, seaside lovers, cycle lovers…and more.
Poppy, the founder of this shop, is queen of freehand embroidery. Her quirky products come from her sketches of everyday life in Cornwall. Back in 2004, when she started, Poppy made everything herself. Now her unique products are made by a team of ladies throughout Cornwall. They cut and sew everything into her lovely range.
I love the name! This wonderful shop is all about natural gardening, British grown bird seed, composting supplies, live and dried worms, beautiful British flowers and so much more. Heather founded Wiggly Wigglers from her kitchen table at her wonderfully named Lower Blakemere Farm in Herefordshire, back in 1990. “We’re here to enhance your time at home and in the garden by delivering a little bit of country living to wherever you live” explains Heather “a country life delivered”.
Championing the #grownnotflown campaign, the Wiggly Wigglers range predominantly sells products sourced from British Farms. Including comfortable goat socks, beautiful British Flower posies, traditional festive wreaths, composting supplies, bird feed, wildflower plants and so much more.
This gorgeous shop based in Scotland was created by Scottish Aromatherapist Gail Bryden. “I create a range of purely natural products designed to balance emotions and enhance a sense of wellbeing” explains Gail, whose products have won many awards.
Such a lovely range. Natural products for the face and body. Plus candles, chocolate, tea and my favourite, aromatherapy rollerballs. All gorgeous.
All of these shops started life as a dream. All have become a beautiful reality. It may have taken a lot of hard work to get to where they are now but they have all done such an amazing job. Each shop is completely different but all have one thing in common, their desire to make their customer very happy.
So many reasons why it is good to shop at independent shops, I share 8 of these in Shop Independent this Christmas. I really love number 8.
I wish all Small Businesses the best of fortune, not just on Small Business Saturday UK, but all year.
Make someone smile, add to a dream and above all make them dance like crazy around their studio, store room or shop.
I would love to hear about your favourite independent shops. Why not share them in the comments or join our Facebook shopping group and share them with others.
As always happy browsing, happy shopping! 🙂
Barbara
Please be aware. All opinions in this blog post are mine. At the time of writing, all shops mentioned are members of Love Our Shops UK. Though I mention lots of shops here, you must form your own opinion as to whether their products are for you.
I aim to include only independently owned shops. Sometimes it is tricky to work out if they are. So, as far as I can tell, they are independently owned, but apologies if the odd one that is not slips into my blog post….they hide it well!
We design and make textile accessories, lovingly created by hand in Cornwall.
A lot of work goes into each piece, using quality materials, local suppliers, simple techniques and old Singer sewing machines.
The range includes bags, purses, pencil cases, tea towels, pictures, cushions, phone cases, badges and tea cosies. We have a very big range!
The designs have been lovingly inspired by the things that surround our every day…sea, animals, cycling, food, countryside, sewing and very importantly tea & cake.
We also love making personalised pictures and we have just added our new ranges of candles and lip balm.
Each piece is individually made with care and attention by our lovely team of stitchers in Cornwall.
